Work Experience
I didn't always "eat, sleep and breathe" financial services. I came into the profession after a lot of other kinds of life and work experience. In 1975 I earned a BFA in Theatre from the University of Cincinnati, then an MFA in writing from UCLA in 1978. After writing a little for television and having a couple of plays professionally produced I became a corporate employee. In 1999 I met with a financial professional because I was desperate for help with an old 401(k).
My financial ignorance at that point was embarrassing. But I was assured it was also universal. Most of us aren't taught the basics of personal finances at home or in school. When we start our work lives we are generally all thrown to the lions financially.
The financial professional I was lucky enough to meet gave me a sorely needed education then worked with me to build a personal game plan for optimum financial health. The clarity I received at that critical juncture inspired me to change career paths and deep-dive into attaining all the accreditation and licensing necessary to become a full-fledged financial professional myself.
